On August 9 and 10 John Giskes was in Paris for a performance and a workshop resolving around 'birth membranes', in cooperation with Dimanche Rouge, center for experimental performances. In this post an impression of the workshop; in the next his performance.
18 oktober 2012 en 28 mei 2010.
John (in rood shirt) lichtte het programma van de workshop toe.
The theme of the workshop was 'birth membranes'. John is experimenting for a few years with membranes, made of some kind of very elastic textile. See for reference the post of October 18, 2012 and May 28, 2010. John (in red shirt) telling about the program of the workshop.
There were seven participants and one lovely dog, who adapted him/herself perfectly to the program. All participants are living in Paris, but it was a very cosmopolitan company.
Body awareness: experience the weight of your arm.
And the weight of the leg and arm of another person.
John talking about Butoh. The strange music and sounds will strongly influence you as Butoh performer.
Butoh performers do not look each other or the public in the face. As if other people are invisible. So you have to learn to feel and look from the corner of your eye to walk without stumbling into each other. Developing an extra sense.
The next exercise: learning to trust your fellow participants and let them lead the way while you close your eyes.
Practicing strange, awkward positions and leaning against each other without interaction; as if you are leaning against a wall.
John: 'Try to become one single entity.'
After the break with a healthy and tasty lunch John told about the principles of Butoh.
Together under a sheet, interpreting the music into movement and shapes.
After this two participants got into a duo membrane and performed as if they were living statues.
Assisted by a solo membrane participant.
The other four participants performed in a multi membrane.
The music and living sculptures attracted some passers-by. What are they doing?
Attention of old and young.
Het was eenzaam in het solo membraan. Zij maakte contact door een brug tussen de twee membraan groepen te creëren.
It felt lonely in the solo membrane. So she made a bridge between the two membrane groups to connect herself.
Birth membrane. Almost literally.
Getting out of the membrane, out of the collective.
A short break with John talking to one of the participants. The dog is still very relaxed; as if the sound and performances are business as usual.
The last part of the workshop: making your own costume and performing as a collective in Butoh style.
A costume made of panties and other textile.
It looks very different after cutting holes in the panties.
The participants appeared to be quite talented for Butoh.
In het uitvoeren van Butoh is niets verplicht. Als je iets niet wilt doen, doe je het niet. Aan de andere kant probeer je natuurlijk wel je eigen grenzen te verleggen.
In performing Butoh nothing is obligatory. If a certain exercise is not for you, then don't. But obviously it is all about pushing boundaries.
Group portrait. Thanks to the participants for the opportunity to take photographs and for their trust.
